The School and Instructors-
We are a small, backyard group dedicated to serious pursuit of the
martial arts. The lead instructor, Bruce Elgin, has been practicing
for 25 years and has over 18 years of experience in Jeet Kune Do, Filipino martial arts and mixed grappling. He is a certified instructor under
the legendary Guro Dan Inosanto and also under Langley West.
About the classes-
The school trains in four main areas...
The first is Jun Fan Gung Fu/Jeet Kune Do Concepts, Bruce Lee's revolutionary martial art. The focus of this art is for the most part on learning practical applications and attributes for street self defense. A high emphasis is placed on physical conditioning in this art.
The second is Integrated Kali Systems, which is a blend of Filipino martial arts that mixes the Inosanto-Lacoste system
with the late Punong Guro Edgar Sulite's Lameco, along with a number of training methods and techniques all our own. This blend of arts is also focused directly on self defense applications with and without weapons. These classes tend to be less aerobic, but build speed, reflexes and the ability to deal with rapidly changing attacks in a fluid manner.
The third area is mixed grappling that
combines Brazillian Ju-Jitsu, Shooto, Eric Paulson's Combat Submission Wrestling and other groundwork techniques. These classes are primarily focused on the sportive aspect of martial arts training. While having strong self defense applications, this section of our training is also directed towards building top-notch ground fighting skills for submission wrestling and mixed martial arts matches.
Strong Attachment Trapping
Unlike most trapping systems that rely soley on forward pressure to function, Strong Attachment Trapping can push, pull, twist and hit while moving the opponent off balance in every direction. You have to try this one to see just how effective it is. Just be ready to be sore afterwards!
The classes often blend into each other and are challenging, often draining, and always entertaining. We strive to provide students with what they are looking for, and what they need by offering the widest range of training in the Iowa City/Coralville area.
And not only do we have the most varied curriculum with the best instructors, but we have a hell of a lot of fun while doing it all. Classes are for the most part very informal, and while we do have a school T-shirt, there are no stuffy or expensive uniforms to buy, and no bizarre rules to follow. To put it simply, we've got lots of serious training with a not-so-serious attitude, you show your respect here by how hard you train and how much you learn, not by how low you bow.
Here are the essentials--
While you don't need to have a bag full of pads and rattan sticks for your first class, we do recommend that you buy your own sooner than later. Come to class for recommendations of what to buy and where.
